RE Syllabus

Awareness, Mystery and Value cover picture In 1999, Bath and North East Somerset SACRE adopted Awareness, Mystery and Value as the new syllabus for Religious Education in schools. This syllabus, is often called the agreed syllabus because it has been agreed by all the committees of SACRE. It is also the RE syllabus for Somerset and North Somerset.

Further information on the syllabus and resources >>

> Religious Education is at present the fastest growing GCSE subject in England and Wales.

> Thousands more young people choose to study RE for a full- or half-GCSE course each year.

> Many countries in the former Soviet Bloc admire RE in Britain so much that it is now part of their curriculum too, as it has been for many years in Scandinavia, most of Germany and other European countries. Some States in the USA are also likely to introduce RE to their schools in the near future.

> RE in Britain has an open and educational stance, helping children and young people know about and understand Christianity and the many other religions represented in the UK. RE helps children and young people learn from religion and think through life-centred current issues for themselves.

> RE is not about making pupils into believers, but tries to help them become literate and articulate about religion, so that they are able to make informed choices about how they want to live their lives while also understanding more about the faith of other people they meet.

Bahá'í supplement to Syllabus

Awareness, Mystery and Value describes the requirement to study religions other than Christianity, and includes sections on Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism. These 5 religions and Christianity are to be studied in accord with the balance indicated for each Key Stage (Awareness, Mystery and Value, p.24). This leaves several Learning Opportunities at each Key Stage which could be used to study religions other than these; this may be especially relevant if students include members of such religions. B&NES SACRE has now agreed to include the Bahá'í Faith as an optional, additional religion which could be studied in appropriate parts of the syllabus.
